File & Database Backup
If your hosting your website with Attitude, you get the added bonus of having off-site backups with 1 to 24hourly intervals.
Your online presence consists of file such as images and text, in more and more cases it also includes a database maybe in the shape of a forum or online shop, without this data you have nothing therefore that data is valuable.
Computers have moving parts in them and it is unfortunate that from time to time a computer will fail no matter how well it's built and maintained. This fact has to be accepted but what happens to your valuable data if the server hosting your website fails?
We know your data is valuable and as such we take every precaution to keep your data safe:
- We only use a RAID level that offers redundancy, in this way if a single hard disk fails the server can continue as though nothing has happened and your data is safe on the remaining disk.
- RAID alone is not enough to protect your data therefore, unlike less experienced web hosting companies, we monitor our RAID arrays and as soon as we detect a fault we correct it, if a fault is left then multiple failures may occur resulting in data loss.
- RAID is not a backup. May web hosts overlook that short statement, RAID will protect data from common disk failures but what happens if you accidentally delete all the files or the server is destroyed, simply put your data is lost, therefore we complement our RAID storage by taking backups of your data, this is a complete copy of all your files and database contents.
- We don't make backups to another disk in the server, this is a common technique used by poor quality hosts, while it would allow restore of files deleted by accident it doesn't allow restoration of files in the event the server is lost, therefore we take each of our backup runs to another server.
- We backup your data once per hour, yes really all your files and databases are all backed up to our dedicated backup server every hour. You might be wondering why so fast especially when you compare that frequency with other hosts backing up once a week, surly once a week is enough? Well no it's not if you are running an online shop or a forum. Think how many orders you get a week or forum posts you get a day, imagine if you lost all of them, the work to recover those orders would be immense, with our system you should loose no more than an hours worth of data, now isn't that much easier and ultimately cheaper for you to recover from?
- We keep history in our backup system, that is we don't just store the latest version of the backup which is a cost saving method used by low grade hosts we store 48 hours worth of hourly backups, 14 days worth of daily backups and 8 weeks worth of weekly backups. Why do we go to such lengths, well just storing the last backup can lead to data being unrecoverable such as in the case where the backup runs before data loss through accidental file deletion is noticed, but with a history we simply keep going back in time until the files are located and restored.
Can you really afford to chance your data and your business to anything less?
